Federal Agency SWAT Teams – Why So Many?

Cartoon - Guns-Are-Bad

This cartoon reminded me of a growing trend in this country – the number of federal agencies with their own SWAT teams.  Among those federal agencies laying claim to their own law enforcement divisions are the State Department, Department of Education, Department of Energy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service, to name just a few. These agencies have secured the services of fully armed agents—often in SWAT team attire—through a typical bureaucratic sleight-of-hand provision allowing for the creation of Offices of Inspectors General (OIG). <Source – worth reading entire article>. You read that correctly. The Department of Education has its own SWAT team!?!?

Why is it necessary to have that many federal SWAT teams? Those questions are being asked by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). I know that a lot of gun owners are not fans of the ACLU because of its representation of people on issues like abortion. However, don’t overlook the fact the ACLU does get involved in issues that affect all of us, like the issue about the militarization of our country’s police forces.  Here’s a summary of a recent ACLU investigation:

Federal funding in the billions of dollars has allowed state and local police departments to gain access to weapons and tactics created for overseas combat theaters – and yet very little is known about exactly how many police departments have military weapons and training, how militarized the police have become, and how extensively federal money is incentivizing this trend. It’s time to understand the true scope of the militarization of policing in America and the impact it is having in our neighborhoods. On March 6th, ACLU affiliates in 23 states filed over 255 public records requests with law enforcement agencies and National Guard offices to determine the extent to which federal funding and support has fueled the militarization of state and local police departments. Stay tuned as this project develops.

Read the ten stories on the ACLU website, and I think you will be glad that someone is looking into the police miltarization issue. I know I am.

About Bud

Yeehaw and Git-R-Done!! I'm just a simple good ole boy who "clings to his God and his guns." In other words, another dumb redneck gun owner you should ignore. That's what the gun confiscation crowd wants you to think, and it's how they falsely portray the majority of gun owners. Read some of the posts on this blog and draw your own conclusions. Then you might want to start questioning everything the government and media tell you about gun issues . . .

  1. Herman Johnson says:

I have been trying to find out if the Bureau of Land Management have their own Swat Team, or if they share with other Government Agency’s?

    • Thank you for your comment. There are a number of articles (example)quoting Rep, Chris Stewart (R-Utah) when he referenced BLM having “its own SWAT team” but I have not seen anything specific that says BLM does have its own SWAT team. Then again, that’s not the type of thing that federal agencies want to make easy to find.
