Durbin and LaPierre Face Off Over Background Checks

Sen. Dick DurbinDuring today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on gun control, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre clashed on the issue of universal background checks.

During Mr. LaPierre’s opening statement, he noted,

And out of more than 76,000 firearms purchases denied by the federal instant check system, only 62 were referred for prosecution and only 44 were actually prosecuted.   Proposing more gun control laws – while failing to enforce the thousands we already have – is not a serious solution to reducing crime.

Mr. LaPierre testified later,

My problem with background checks is you’re never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks.  We  don’t even prosecute anybody right now that goes through the system we have.  None of it makes any sense in the real world.

Mr. LaPierre’s statement caused Senator Durbin to lash out at the NRA official by interrupting and tersely stating that background checks would mean,

Criminals won’t go to purchase the guns, because there will be a background check! We’ll stop them from the original purchase.  You missed that point completely!

As the audience began to cheer, LaPierre interrupted Durbin, “Senator, I think you missed the point!”

At times, I seriously wonder if our politicians live in the real world.  Here’s a secret:  Criminals who want guns will figure out a way to get them, with or without universal background checks.  Will a law requiring universal background checks stop criminals from getting guns?  Absolutely not!   After such a law goes into effect, I predict that you would see a sudden increase in the number of “burglaries” where the straw buyer just happens to be burglarized shortly after purchasing a weapon.  Add a little insurance fraud in connection with the burglary, and the criminals will actually make some side money when obtaining their guns.

By the way, I did not hear any of the Democrat senators respond to the fact that there were only 44 prosecutions out of the 76,000 firearms purchases denied by the federal instant check system.  Read that again!  We don’t need more laws; we need to enforce the laws which are already on the books.

About Bud

Yeehaw and Git-R-Done!! I'm just a simple good ole boy who "clings to his God and his guns." In other words, another dumb redneck gun owner you should ignore. That's what the gun confiscation crowd wants you to think, and it's how they falsely portray the majority of gun owners. Read some of the posts on this blog and draw your own conclusions. Then you might want to start questioning everything the government and media tell you about gun issues . . .
